India 99-1 Nigeria

At the end of the Nigerian Civil war, in 1970, the military governor of Lagos - Mobolaji Johnson - decided to host an exhibition football match. This match was to help Nigerian citizens to forget about the war and y to gather funds to rebuild the country. Ghan were set to be their opponents, but after their Independence Day defeat to Ghana,Johnson found a different opponent.

Choosing another African state would be more feasible, however Johnson decided on South Asian country India. Johnson felt they would be a walkover and with Johnson's opinion on India's ability being so strong, he enforced some strange rules on the game. The game was to be played barefooted for both sets of players, and every goal the Blue Tigers scored, would count as 3. And if Nigeria scored, the game would be ended

The game was underway. and with only seconds played, India scored their first goal. Within 25 minutes of the game India had scored 10 goals and by half-time, they had scored 18. Claims of black magic were being thrown around the dressing room as the Nigerian coach was left baffled.

The second half began and the rest of the game was full of mysterious occurrences that only the Nigerian players could see. There were even cries of the ball being caught on fire every time the Nigerian went to kick it. Nigeria's Goalkeeper even claimed that a lion would come out of the ground every time an Indian forward went to score, a lion would come out of the ground and scare the keeper into not saving the ball. The Indian onslaught continued and after 33 goals were scored, the ball dropped to a Nigerian forward who aimed for goal. Just before contact, the ball turned to stone and hit the back of the net. The player dropped to the floor goal before passing away, thus ending the game.

No official record within the Nigerian or Indian Football Associations of this game ever being played. So why does this story exist? It is possible that this game was organised as an unofficial benefit match to help the nation of Nigeria. The likelihood of India winning 99-1 is very little, however it is likely that if the game was played, India won by a significant margin. To cover their embarrassment up, fans that weren't present at the game were told this baffling story.
